CO2NET Annual Seminar 2008, hosted by Vattenfall, will be held at Sofitel Victoria Hotel, UL. Krolewska St 11 00-065 Warsaw, Poland from Tuesday 22nd to Thursday 24th April 2008.
What's it all about
CO2NET, the Carbon Dioxide Capture and Geological Storage (CCS) Knowledge Transfer Network promotes CCS projects and integrates the CO2 capture and storage communities’ activities to work together to accelerate enabling technologies towards CO2 emissions reduction through CCS; avoid duplication of effort, identify gaps in the technology to give clear ways forward and integrated turnkey solutions for CCS demonstration and commercialisation. It has committed participation of currently 78 organizations from 27 countries. Collectively, CO2NET possesses extensive knowledge in carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology.
The intent of CO2NET is to enable safe and viable technology to reduce atmospheric accumulation of the greenhouse gas, Carbon Dioxide. Its goal is to educate and to promote dissemination of the CCS expertise. There has been significant acceleration of events during 2007 and since the last Seminar in Lisbon following the political realisation that fossil fuels are required in the short to medium term and that demonstration of CCS is required urgently. The EU has committed to reducing its overall emissions to at least 20% below 1990 levels by 2020, and is ready to scale up this reduction to as much as 30% under a new global climate change agreement if other developed countries make comparable efforts. One of the stated targets was to make CCS mandatory for all generating plant by 2020 whether gas or coal fired. Most recently, the Commission has proposed a Directive to enable environmentally-safe capture and geological storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the EU as part of its major legislative package which seeks to promote the development and safe use of carbon capture and storage (CCS), a suite of technologies that allows the carbon dioxide emitted by industrial processes to be captured and stored underground where it cannot contribute to global warming. Revised guidelines on state aid for environmental protection will enable governments to support CCS demonstration plants, up to 12 demonstration commercial scale plants are proposed. Central to the EU strategy is a strengthening and expansion of the Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), the EU's key tool for cutting emissions cost-effectively. Emissions from the sectors covered by the system will be cut by 21% by 2020 compared with levels in 2005. A single EU-wide cap on ETS emissions will be set, and free allocation of emission allowances will be progressively replaced by auctioning of allowances by 2020.
Against this backdrop of much strategic activity relating to CCS e.g. within the ZEP, the CO2NET Board confirms that CO2NET will continue to enable interactions at the working level between teams and transfer of crucial lessons learnt and skills to incoming personnel. CO2NET continues to provide the education to understand CCS in detail. It has a key role in building “people capability” in CCS. It is important that CCS engineers, geologists and technologists meet and talk to present and discuss their actual work. CO2NET in this role complements the strategic CCS initiatives. To this end, the 2008 Annual CO2NET seminar will be held in Warsaw, Poland, from 22-24 April, 2008. The seminar will emphasize experiences from practical projects, the technology developed to enable them, and their successes and failures. It is anticipated that EU projects completed or nearing completion, such as CASTOR "CO2 from Capture to Storage", and ENCAP "Enhanced Capture of CO2", and planned and active demonstration programmes will be presented and discussed in detail. As previously, this is a forum to bring together technical experts participating in CCS and those new to the field to have fruitful information exchange, furthering integration of CCS technologies into commercial opportunities. The range of topics for the seminar includes:
- Capture Technologies – technical advances and R&D issues
- Geological Storage – technical advances and R&D issues
- CCS projects sponsored at the national level
- CCS safety and the risks associated
- CCs economics and legal framework necessary to facilitate carbon capture and storage
- CCS Transport
- CO2 quality
Who should attend
Participants from CO2NET members (3 per Sponsor, 2 per Standard member, 1 per Basic member) for whom membership is open globally. The critical mass of the network lies in Europe. Maximum attendance is 150 participants, so early booking is advised. A seminar place is assured for the 50 delegates, who preregistered at Lisbon. The CO2NET Annual Seminar is structured to reflect and emphasise the integration of CCS activities towards commercialisation. To get delegates thinking about the total integration of CCS technology, focused sessions emphasise project developments, pilot plant and/or commercial demonstration projects and offer presentations from capture, transport and storage projects, which fit identified problems and solutions. The aim is to fuel input to the technology debates organized at the seminar with delegates contributing to knowledge transfer from their relevant experience.
As the work force in CCS expands, into CCS are coming many young scientists, engineers and technologists, trained in the very latest techniques and eager to contribute to CCS technology development. Without the years of experience, they need to understand quickly and effectively what is the current state of the art in key areas of CCS technology. What can be done now? Who are the leaders in each area? Where they can go to learn this knowledge? The answers to such questions can be found at CO2NET Annual Seminars.
Technical specialists provide expertise on a wide range of technical problems associated with Carbon Capture and Storage. Many have worked in this field since the concept of capturing carbon dioxide from industrial processes and putting it back into the ground into geological structures started to gain momentum and have amassed considerable knowledge and experience. The industry looks to these people to keep the technology developing through the adoption of novel operational solutions and innovative techniques based upon sound knowledge and experience. Their presentations bring their breakthroughs, solutions and problems to the seminar. Networking in earlier seminars has built upon this reservoir of practical and analytical capabilities with detailed technical discussion and verbal peer review.
CO2NET Annual Seminar 2008 will benefit all engaged in the application, development and research of carbon capture and storage. It will also be of interest to those from end user industries such as power generation, steel production, aluminium smelting, cement manufacture and other heavy industries, where CCS technology offers a novel solution to their emission problems and of particular value to designers, facility and operations engineers, consultants and researchers from operating, contracting, consultancy, technology, legislative companies, governments and regulatory authorities.
How to become actively involved. How to submit presentation abstract
Overviews describing the present understanding and capabilities or detailed Technical Presentations are being sought and selected. The core technology sessions are geared towards addressing both the challenges that were addressed in the undertaken projects and the outstanding R & D problems that have to be solved. Parallel sessions are being included with the new addition of debates on the most likely technologies to achieve commercialisation and the associated scientific hurdles that have to be crossed. We intend to have a focused set of presentations in all categories, relevant to the various field implementations within EC. The technical team rapporteurs will co-ordinate and present the lessons learned (revised from 2007) and present a summary of CCS technology gaps for further discussion in the final plenary session.
Call for Presentations and/or Posters
If you have a project that you wish to present, presenters are now invited to submit the project details, (specifying if this is an oral or written (poster) presentation or both), title of your presentation, contact details and up to half A4 page abstract illustrating why your project should be showcased at the seminar, what CCS advancements have been made and how will it influence CCS technology development, to reach technicalteam@co2net.com as soon as possible and no later than Monday 25 February 2008 for consideration, please. The title should describe the presentation content. The abstract must be relevant to the scope.
Selection of presentations will take account of originality, relevance and likely interest to delegates. Predominantly theoretical presentations are normally expected to include experimental or other practical validation, especially field validation. “Sales pitches” are only acceptable as posters. Presentations should be of a technical nature. Exhibition space to support the presentations with posters is available, please contact secretariat@co2net.com to book.
